Art.a.ma.jig is an event hosted by Tanner Hill Gallery for the Arts & Education Council here in Chattanooga. Artists are asked to donate a piece of work with a common theme. This years is “I Am Fierce”.  I played with this concept in my head, rolled it out to paper and asked my friend Amanda to pose for me. These are my musings on the session and not the model’s. Amanda’s very unassuming and the last person I can think of as “fierce” in the literal sense of the word but she does have some demons writhing around inside her, as I know I do. Amanda’s break through her skin in the form of tattoos. This sugar skull on her shoulder manifests itself into the fierceness that I’m looking for, her open hand clutches at her shattered side. There’s a lot of emotion in this piece already, the floating jellyfish juxtaposed to the hacking strokes of paint. I can’t wait to see where this goes. Bella Sera is One of the Chattanooga’s most anticipated annual fundraising events benefiting Chattanooga Endeavors, a nonprofit organization. I have donated this piece, Study of April Lee, Oil on Hardboard to the auction. Bella Sera takes place June 5, 2010 in Renaissance Park,  6:00 — 10:00 pm.

I’ve just completed a live demo at the Asher Love Gallery in Chattanooga. I did an oil painting of a live model in 3 hours as part of my Seeds show, on display until the end of May. I also did 2 work ups, one in oil and this one in pastel, to compose the picture and choose my colors.

I’m auctioning this pastel, Girl on a Red Sofa, 10.5″  x 14″  on Stonehenge paper online. Just leave a comment with your bid. The auction will run until Friday, May 28th. The highest bidder at 12 p.m. EST wins! Minimum bid is $75.00.

Seeds
I am primarily a figurative painter and have done only minor exploration of the abstract. The genesis of this series began in Portland, Oregon in 2008. I’d done a painting in acrylic based on an idea suggested by my painting group, anthropomorphism. I had an experiment from a seminar that I’d taught at the Pacific Northwest College of art in my basement which I embellished by pushing and pulling the shapes, adding eyes and rows of teeth. The painting was a great success, a man stopped me on the train and asked if I had a web site and if he could buy the work. I said it wasn’t indicative of my style or subject and set the work aside.
I left Portland in the late Spring of 2009 and stayed with my brother in Wilmington, NC for the Summer. I found myself without models, a studio and not being much of a plein air painter, any inspiration in the landscape. I did have his garage, lots of wood and some acrylics and the memory of the a fore mentioned painting. That’s where the Seeds series was born. They started with small pieces, tiny 6” x 6” images and meandered their way to larger works. I put the paint on the surface and let it take me places that I’d never been, no limits on color, save for the primaries and a few greens, and shape and no desire to be representational.
The Seeds are a metaphor for my journey from designer and illustrator to painter, the germination of a new beginning.
